Social Questions

Started: 7/10/99

Ended 10/29/99

Why?  Well,   because children are constantly asked social questions by strangers.  Also, what if your child is  lost? What if they can’t even tell the police their name or their phone number?  It also leads the way for programs like statement-statement which is often a way that young children 2-4 communicate  (My moms name is Cindy.  Well, my moms name is sallie!)

Directions:  Teach Lukas to respond to common social questions such as “what’s your name?”  He should respond with a full sentence.  We can relax this later as his language improves.  Teach him at least 25-30 questions. Once they are mastered, generalize it. For instance,  word it in a different way:

Whats your name? How are you called? Whats your first name? Do you have a name?  Who are you?

Once you have 25-30 questions,  start statement-statement.

The data books noted

Looking through the data pages,  I saw that we usually just full verbal prompted him on novel questions.  He had full sentence issues.  I am still unsure if we should have ALWAYS forced him to say sentences versus just answering. I saw that I went right into random rotation with Lukas and that on our third session, I just hit them while playing legos on the floor versus being ONLY at the table.  The was noted because after targets were mastered, they were to go into the generalization log.  Contrary to all the rumours out there, not all drill work is done only at the table.  IT is convenient if you have a highly distractable child and one who has compliance issues but Lukas was neither so we could do this.

8/4/99: The tutor noted that she targeted 14/5/6/2/3 and that he missed the switch on it. In other words:  whats your name? Lukas.  That’s right.

Whats your name? Lukas.  That rights.

Whats your name? Lukas. That’s right.

How old are you? Lukas.   No.

She was asking target 5, 5 times in a row before switching to target 6. When she first attempted target 6,  he gave the answer for target 5.  This will tell you one of two things. He either doesn’t really know what he is saying and is just parroting your full verbal prompt or he wasn’t listening and was waiting to get out the chair. J The next tutors intermixed mastered items more to see if  it was an actual intermixing issue or if he just wasn’t paying attention (poor reinforcement perhaps?)

On 8/6/99, the tutor noted that she asked “what is your favourite colour?” and he responded “I have green eyes.”   This tells me one of two things… Lukas “knew the drill” and was just giving out an answer OR he had WH discrim issues and was just picking out a key word “colour” and coming up with an answer he thought would match.   I tend to lean towards wh discrim issues because it would become apparent a year later, that we needed to rework our WH discrim program.

8/11/99:  He was messing with the tutor.  She had this down:  target 13  #correct over number of trials:  3/30    under remarks:  he knows this.  He wouldn’t stop whispering the answering.   This tells me reinforcement issues were at play and that Lukas was getting her goat. J

Language wise,  we had to correct his full sentences because he often left out words like “is”  “in”.
