What’s Missing?

Start:  5/3/00

End: 5/17/00

Directions & SDs:

a.)    Put three items on the table. Ask Lukas to list the items he see. He should list the items from his left to right. Tell him to close his eyes. Remove one of the items. Have Lukas open his eyes and tell you what is missing.

b.)    Once he gets the idea, increase the number of items to four, then five.

c.)    Next, you can do the same thing with pictures. A simple way to do this is to put out a row of flash cards. Then you can have pictures of several items. The two pictures are identical except for the third item.

d.)    When Lukas reaches this point, you can do “whats Wrong/Silly” Show Lukas a picture and have him tell you what’s wrong. For instance, you could have a picture of a person but have their nose missing! (Microsoft Paint programs work well for this! Just copy pictures from major clothing store websites and erase body parts)

e.)    Do this “in vivo”. Walk around with one shoe on and one shoe off and see if he tells you whats wrong/silly. Give him soup and don’t get him a spoon.  Put the cereal in the fridge and the milk in the cupboard.

Lukas hit most of this without any trouble.   The reason for the strange dates on target items 3-5 is that the tutors were not hitting things like they were suppose to.  We have a rule that mastery doesn’t happen until you hit 90% or more across two tutors, two days, three consecutive sessions.   Often, the data showed that a well meaning tutor hit the target but didn’t hit

The right target. J  It is a harsh rule but it is in place for a reason.

We did this across stimuli and it was done in many places and often intermixed with other programs.

We are lucky in that this was not a hard program for us.

We probed OTHER ideas to include “whats different”?  This is where you show three items (start less if the child has trouble) and have them close their eyes. Do not remove the object but change it. For instance,  place a hat on the baby doll.
