AEL stands for Athlitiki Enosi Lemesou which, in a free translation, means Limassol (Lemesos) Sports United. AEL are one of the oldest clubs on the island with a history that stretches back to 1930 when some sports enthusiasts, and most notably Demetris Tsieppis and Nikos Solomonides, decided to create a club in order to promote the sports ideals in Limassol.
AEL currently maintain football (soccer), basketball and volleyball squads. In addition, in the past AEL maintained hockey, handball, as well as water sports and athletics teams.
The record number of titles that AEL have won over the years (102 in total), has established the Limassol club as the undoubtable leader in the Cypriot sports scene. (© copyright ael-limassol.net 2001)

ΑΠΟΣΠΑΣΜΑ

...με την ακτινοβολία, πλέον, της πρωταθλήτριας, η ΑΕΛ αγκαλιάζεται καθολικά από τους Λεμεσιανούς και αναπτύσσει όλα τα αθλήματα με μοναδική επιτυχία.
Φέρνει στη Λεμεσό τίτλους στο ποδόσφαιρο, την καλαθόσφαιρα, την πετόσφαιρα, την χειροσφαίρηση, τα θαλάσσια αθλήματα, το χόκεϋ ενώ στο στίβο αθλητές της ανακηρύσονται παγκυπριονίκες, πανελληνιονίκες και εκπροσωπούν επάξια το σωματείο σε Βαλκανιάδες και Ολυμπιάδες με τα χρώματα της Ελλάδας...
